Abstract

This paper deals with the dynamic behaviour of a tubular chemical reactor when axial diffusion is taken into account under such circumstances that oscillating solutions give rise to deterministic chaos. Two main problems demand special attention and have been carefully considered in this paper. The former is related to the causes of chaos onset, that have been found in the possible destabilizing effect of PI controller action on the inlet temperature. The latter problem lies in the extreme difficulty of handling numerically, a PDE set which is stiff in nature and of which one looks for chaotic solutions.
