Abstract

During the spring of 1939, Mr. H. N. Richardson, of the Consumers Sand Company, Topeka, Kan., sent word to the Museum that they had recently pumped from the Kaw river at North Topeka, Kan., a number of bones and teeth. We visited the sand pump and found that they had recovered parts of two tusks and a palate of a young mastodon; a portion of a right antler with part, of the brain case and a part of a skull with parts of the right and left antlers attached of Cervalces. These specimens were pumped out at a depth of 25 feet below the present stream bed. Mr. Richardson kindly donated the specimens to the University Museum. Since this is the first authentic record of Cervalces from Kansas it warrants placing the specimens on record.
