Abstract

Parallel to re-questioning the concept of urbanization in the world especially through the recent years, there are many researches being made on the livability of the cities and the urban quality of life. Although cities with higher life standards are more livable than the others, there are still some certain criteria that should be paid attention to in such cities. Criteria such as how people spend their time, which activities they occupy themselves with, in what ways they transport to where and if the city is walkable show the quality of life and the livability of that city. Walkability, rather than implying the mere act of walking from one place to the other, is a criteria that promotes transportation, touring, socializing, healthy life and environment in cities that has high quality of life and walking routes. Alanya is a city that grows irregularly with the effects of tourism and conclusively the livability of the city is negatively affected by the increasing population and migration. The aim of this essay is to analyze the concepts of quality of life and livability on the basis of walkability by investigating Alanya. Method: Within this study, an urban reading is performed on Alanya in terms of walkability experience using the urban reading measurements of Jan Gehl. Results: Various results were obtained on demographic density, activities, usage density, habits, public space, eating and drinking, resting and ground floor usages based on observations, investigations and analyses in the Alanya Fortress area and its surroundings. Conclusion: In consideration of the results, 9 urban routes that would increase the urban experience are suggested and the target is to raise the quality of life with each of these routes that the citizens experience the city by walking.
