Abstract

The Raman scattering spectra of Rb 2 ZnCl 4 single crystals were measured over the temperature range covering the successive phase transitions. The soft mode, whose frequency decreases as the transition point T 1 =302 K is approached from below, was observed for the a ( c c ) b scattering orientation. This soft mode corresponds to the so-called amplitude mode in the incommensurate phase. The possibility of the anticrossing of two modes, one of which is the soft mode, is suggested.
