Abstract

Modern instructional methods are aimed at developing understanding. It is generally agreed that an optimal learning sequence of mathematical concepts moves from concrete to semiconcrete (iconic) to abstract learning experiences. Such a sequence involves objects and their manipulation, pictures or models of real objects, and, finally, the use of abstract symbols.
