Abstract

The ratio β of the density of fast nucleons to that of electrons in extensive showers has been measured within 20 metres of the shower axis, the nucleons being detected through the evaporation neutrons arising from the interactions of these particles. It is shown that the ratio β decreases with increasing distance from the shower axis and also decreases with increasing shower size over a range defined by electron densities in the immediate neighbourhood of the axis of from 50 to 350 m-2.
