Abstract
Long works of prose fiction have been written from classical antiquity to the present; but the English novel is widely accepted as a genre important elements of which one does not see until the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It is also understood to be a genre not fully recognizable until Defoe, Richardson and Fielding each provided a unique model of the form. Though at one level accurate, this simple view needs heavy qualification because the shape of the novel and its origins are both complicated matters. For a solid understanding of the issues that comprise this difficult subject, one must read the relevant literature, important works of which I cite below.
