Abstract
Using the nonrelativistic symmetric quark model and the Melosh transformation between the current and the constituent quark we calculate the matrix element of the current-current strangenesschanging nonleptonic weak Hamiltonian density between two nucleon octet hyperons in terms of the universal Fermi coupling constant. The result of this calculation agrees remarkably well with the value obtained for this matrix element from a previous analysis of the nonleptonic weak decays of the hyperons based on current algebra, dispersion relations, Regge asymptotic behavior, resonance saturation of the absorptive parts and some general results of the symmetric quark model.
