Abstract

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was studied by a conventional thermogravimetric technique under various heating rates in a flowing nitrogen. The kinetic model that accounts for the ef fects of scission of the polymeric chain at any time was proposed to describe the thermal decomposition of PVC. The thermal decomposition was found to be a complex process composed of at least two steps for which kinetic values can be cal culated. The kinetic analysis of PVC gave apparent activation energy for the first step of 159.7 kJ/mol, with a value of 189.6 kJ/mol for the second step.
