Abstract

The Graphical Kernel System was first published as an International Standards Organisation standard in 1985. It was formally decided in 1989 that the standard should be revised. The paper notes steps taken in the revision process, and describes the main features of the new GKS, together with the steps taken to preserve compatibility with the existing GKS. An evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, approach has been taken. In the new GKS, the application is given more control over graphical output and input. The relationship to other graphics standards, particularly the Computer Graphics Metafile, is more clearly defined. The system is expressed at a higher level of abstraction.
