Abstract

Highlighting the background to its emergence and the constraints it faced in its operationalisation, this paper assesses the historical significance of the Nehruvian era in India's industrialisation history and the role that the Nehruvian paradigm has played in shaping the achievements and failures of Indian industrialisation. It also briefly looks at the contemporary significance of the Nehruvian industrialisation strategy in the light of the experience of industrial development under liberalisation.
