Abstract

Recent developments in basic knowledge of the negative end of anomalous (abnormal) cold cathode discharges are discussed. The following features are considered: the cathode fall space, the negative glow, the boundary zone between fall space and negative flow. Some details of the role of the cathode glow (erste Kathodenschicht) and of the effect of the wall charges near the negative glow are uncertain. Otherwise there are no obvious outstanding problems, at least for tubes with simple geometry, if the gas composition is shown. Where quantitative data for discharge parameters do not already exist, methods are available for measuring them with confidence, as well as reliable theoretical techniques for predicting them.
