Abstract

There is an increasing need for the setting aside of representative examples of biotic communities in East Africa quite apart from the national parks. Some examples are given of uses of nature reserves for research purposes, as ecological barriers against the spread of disease, and as botanical reserves. A list is presented of East African areas requiring nature reserve status. There is a need for comprehensive survey of all biotic communities, to locate and identify examples that should be considered for preservation.
