Abstract
The strategy comprises a co-ordinated set of activities designed to take place over several years which evolve as new priorities and new evidence on prevention emerge. It provides a coherent approach to suicide prevention based on the four key principles of comprehensiveness, evidence-based, specific and subject to evaluation and is geared towards six goals: ■ to reduce risk in key high-risk groups ■ to promote mental wellbeing in the wider population ■ to reduce the availability and lethality of suicide methods ■ to improve reporting of suicidal behaviour in the media ■ to promote research on suicide and suicide prevention ■ to improve monitoring of progress towards the target to reduce suicides.
