Abstract

The national revivals among the Croats and the Serbian minority in Croatia constituted one of the decisive factors of the dissolution of Yugoslavia and led to a bloody and violent civil war in Croatia. The events in Croatia and in the rest of Yugoslavia were covered intensively by the Western media. One of the most common explanations offered by journalists was that the end of communist rule took the lid off national aspirations and old hatreds. This chapter puts the popular imagery of ‘tribalism’ and ‘irrationality’ to the test and examines whether the national upheavals can be seen as the result of more rationally based strategies.KeywordsOpposition PartiInternal ColonizationFederal AuthorityNationalist PartyFederal CentreThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
