Abstract

Shortly before the national uprising of 1 November 1954, Mouloud Mammeri's first novel, La Colline oubliee, was given a laudatory reception by the French press, notably the Algerian-based colonial newspapers.' These rather unusual praises were met with suspicion and even defiance in Algerian nationalist circles. One of the most outspoken and characteristic reactions came from Mohammed Cherif Sahli, an influential member of the intelligentsia in the early fifties:
