Abstract

Here’s a quiz question for you. Which one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) institutes and centers can boast that since its founding in 1962, its grantees have garnered 57 Nobel Prizes, including 31 in physiology or medicine and 26 in chemistry? The answer is the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Of all the 27 institutes and centers, it is the one whose central mission is to support basic biomedical research and training nationwide and thereby lay the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
