Abstract

Jointly the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), ASM, and its members have helped revolutionize biomedical research. ASM is the largest life science professional society in the United States, with 39,000 members working in academia, industry, government, and health care. Among the core activities of the Society and its members are efforts to promote human health, to train tomorrow's leaders, to promote use of microbes in biotechnology, and to articulate the needs for microbiology in academic, industrial, and clinical laboratories. Microbiologists have made game-changing discoveries with support from investigator-initiated programs in genetics and in cell and molecular biology that form the foundation of the NIGMS research portfolio. NIGMS and its outstanding program staff deserve the thanks of ASM and its members for exceptional work in ensuring national excellence in biomedical and microbiology research.
