Abstract

This paper aims to explain the aesthetic dimension of Pope Benedict‘s interpretation of Michelangelo‘s Last Judgement, which he defined as an „Image of responsibility“. This analysis focuses on the communicative, and perceptive power of the Last Judgement by comparing Michelangelo‘s art theory with that of Leonardo‘s. Michelangelo‘s new conception of time and space was inspired by the scientific revolutions of his time. With his new technique he was able to overcome traditional concepts of perspective and composition, thus announcing a surprisingly modern relation between spectator and image which anticipated the one present in Impressionism, especially Monet‘s paintings. Thus, in this sense, we may consider Michelangelo as a „modern icon“, which leads to an intimate, mystical experience of salvation.
