Abstract

S abah, which was formerly known as British North Borneo, is today a prospering state in the Federation of Malaysia located on the northern tip of the island of Borneo (see map). It is a land abounding in natural beauty and resources with a cultural heritage rich in musical expression. The majority of Sabah's population is composed of three major native groups: (1) The Moslem settlements (including the Bajaus, Suluks, Illanuns, Obians, Binadans and the Brunei Malays) are found mainly on the coastal areas and in the river estuaries; (2) the Dusans (the largest of the three groups and called Kadazans in the Penampang and Papar districts) live mainly on the rich farm lands of the coastal plains and the lower uplands and are either Christians (about one third) or animistic; and (3) the Muruts (the smallest of the three groups) are located in the mountainous interior of the State and are animistic.
