Abstract
A steamship is the modern water transport in 18th and 19th century. The industrial revolution that happened in Europe make the economy activities grow more advance with steamship technology. The steamship becomes main transport to go to Southeast Asia that has a lot of resources that can support industrial needs in Europe. North Borneo have a huge amount and variety natural resources. The British North Borneo Company managed to take full control of North Borneo in 1882. North Borneo ruled by British North Borneo causing a new change to North Borneo, which is an introduction to steamship service that makes shipping activities become more easier. Besides that, to make this shipping activity become more efficient in North Borneo, British North Borneo Company created a systematic system that records the arrival and departures steamship. The system also recorded amount of steamships that operated in North Borneo and shipping tax. However, British North Borneo don’t have a full record about the steamship technology that operated in North Borneo port. Furthermore, this article will explain more detail about the evolution of steamship engine technology in North Borneo from 1883 until 1950 that mark the glory time for steamship service in North Borneo. This article also using a library and archive sources as a reference to completed this article. The results from this writing describe the steamship technology in North Borneo have the same level with Europe and can compete with other steamship that operates in Southeast Asia and East Asia.
