Abstract

The multipolarity of the K-forbidden 1094 keV γ-transition in the decay of 172Lu has been re-investigated by γγ angular correlation and linear polarization correlation measurements. The use of a Ge(Li) detector for the low-energy lines gave a good separation of the different cascades, and consequently more reliable results could be obtained than previous NaI(T1) measurements had given. We derived from these new data for the multipolarity of the 1094 keV line, a mixture of 91% E2 and 9 % M1. The mixing parameter is δ=+3.2±0.2 The linear polarization correlation of the 1094–79 keV γγ-cascade agrees fairly well with this multipole mixture; but it is in disagreement with a measurement by Stautberg et al. A measurement of the circular polarization of the 1094 keV line gave | P c ≦1% We found no evidence for a parity mixing in this transition.
