Abstract

This epidemic has taken the best years of my life and the lives of most of my friends. I have exactly two friends left of the friends I made living in Washingon, DC for 17 years! All dead of AIDS except me and two others. That's tough on a guy. So I try to tell things like I see them. I've done it the way I write character profiles for my novels: from the five aspects of the human personality. Please note that I have many friends—both male and female—with HIV, and although I am in a 12-year relationship with a person of color, I can only try to speak for former middle-class gay white men with AIDS. I say “former” because it is only a matter of time before most of us “gay white boys” become wiped out financially. I, for instance, worked at the White House then went on to serve as Assistant Head of Publications & Media at the Library of Congress. Now I live solely on Social Security disability checks. I own no real estate. My net worth is less than $4,000—if I sell everything I can lay my hands on. These are the people I'm talking about here. There are LOTS of us.
