Abstract
The practical validity of the Fokker-Planck or diffusion approximation in population genetics is investigated. The form of the equilibrium distribution, the loss of variation under frequency dependent selection, and the probability of fixation and the mean fixation time under genic selection are calculated from the full master equation of the Moran model. The results agree fairly well with those obtained from the Fokker-Planck equation. In spite of its theoretical weakness the Fokker-Planck equation seems to produce reliable results, but the master equation is also worth attention.
