Abstract

Elution fractionation in a column has been used to study the MWD of the vinylidene fluoride emulsion copolymer with 3,7-dioxaperfluoro-1-octene (VF-DOPFO copolymer). The dependence of the intrinsic viscosity on the mol.wt. has been established and the MWD of the copolymers has been found to be bimodal. The effect on the MWD of the comonomer ratio in the original mixture, of the emulsifier concentration and the monomer conversion has been examined. The polymerization was found to proceed in two parallel phases, i.e. a micro-emulsion of the monomer and of the latex particles based on the emulsifier micelles.
