Abstract
The Nanjing grand commandant (Nanjing shoubei) and the Nanjing eunuch grand commandant (Nanjing shoubei taijian) were two prominent figures in the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), leading respectively the military forces and eunuch establishment in Nanjing, the southern capital of the dynasty. With the Nanjing minister of war (Nanjing bingbu shangshu), the three were the most powerful people in the Nanjing administration. Focusing on the two grand commandants, this research note discusses the troika in an effort to shed light on the often obscure southern capital leadership of the Ming period after 1420.
