Abstract

This study concerns the mechanism of material removal and how it affects the structure of the machined component. Deformation severity is related to the different techniques available for material removal. Grain growth due to heat generated during abrasive sectioning has been demonstrated. Through the utilisation of microindentation, supported by microstructural analysis, it has been shown how phase migration is an additional consideration when mechanically working ductile material surfaces. Finally an assessment of the effect of structural deformation on component life is made. From this work the relationship of deformation by material removal mechanisms are related to surface preparation for microstructural analysis.
