Abstract

Abstract Goffman's analysis of betrayal in relation to mental hospitalisation focuses on the betrayal of the mental patient by his or her next‐of‐relation, and is an ungendered analysis. This paper expands the notion of betrayal in the family relations of mental patients in two ways. First, betrayal is considered as a process with a number of dimensions, including not only the betrayal of the mental patient by family members but also betrayal of the family by the mental patient. Second, aspects of this process are analysed in the context of gender roles in the 1950s family.
