Abstract

There has been a matter of serious concern, for a number of years, that junior and senior high school students are less and less interested in science. With the view of promoting science education and of letting the young realize the wonders of nature and the real appeal of science, we held a workshop meeting of Diamond Synthesis. Over 100 students from neighboring prefectures of the Kanto area attended it. A diamond synthesizing device can be composed of test tubes and rubber stoppers found in science classroom; it simply costs several thousand yen. Alcohol was chosen as the carbon source. The participants assembled the devices working together. We knew, through the questionnaire survey filled by the participants, that they wished for experimental or experiential science lessons and science lessons which move them and enable them to share the pleasure of making discoveries. It may be rightly said, Strike the iron while it is hot. I sincerely hope that the young, while they are sensitive in their early days, shall be provided with impressive experience in science, as fresh as when they are exposed to culture shock.
