Abstract

Vernalization by low temperature (5 °C) in the long-day plant Silene armeria L. is only effective when applied during the dark phases of short-day cycles. This is similar to the effect of temperatures above 30 °C. Presumably, chromosomal reblocking of the floral-hormone forming gene in darkness takes place at medium temperatures only, and neither at extremely low nor at extremely high temperatures.
