Abstract

The surface tensions of some pure liquids and solutions of surface-active agents have been measured by methods either involving or not involving rupture of the liquid—air surface. It is shown that rupture of the surface can produce serious erros in measurement with solutions, especially when the surface tension is slow in reaching a steady value. The Wilhelmy-plate method does not suffer from these errors because the plate is never pulled from the surface.
