Abstract

A magnetic form factor for liquid Ce has been determined for the first time by comparing the differential scattering cross section of thermal neutrons for liquid Ce with that for liquid La. It is concluded that although the form factor is consistent with the dipole approximation and a 2F5/2 spectroscopic state for Ce3+, roughly 20% of the Ce ions in the liquid state are instantaneously magnetically inactive.
