Abstract
We show that the second order reduced density matrix can be accurately estimated using a variational treatment where the entries of the third order matrix appear as variational parameters. We also discuss a fundamental Optimization Theorem, which can be applied in this variational method, and introduce the notion of dual configuration interaction.
