Abstract

The magnetic susceptibilities of powdered specimens of nine acetylacetonates and three ethylenediaminetetraacetate complexes of the rare earths were measured from 1.3 to 20 deg K. Measurements were maden with an a-c bridge using frequencies from 100 to 2000 cycles. In the case of dysprosium acetyIacetonate (only) relaxation effects were observed, correspending to a spin- lattice relaxation time of about a millisecond. The temperature dependence of the susceptibilities was analyzed for crystalline fieIds of cubic and of trigonal symmetry. The results are better represented by the cubic field, but show distinct deviations corresponding to lower symmetry.
