Abstract

Measurements of the longitudinal magnetoresistance ϱ zz ( H z ) of graphite with primary electric current perpendicular to the basal planes ( J̃ | c̃ | H̃) are reported in magnetic fields up to 8 tesla (80 kG). Several new features have been observed, including saturation effects at 77°K, the observation of quantum oscillations (Shubnikov-de Haas effect) up to the n = 1 Landau level, and further structure in the oscillations at T = 1.4° K. The results are compared to the transverse magnetoresistance ϱ χχ( H z ) and discussed in relation to recently proposed models for c-axis conduction.
