Abstract
The Local Public Works Program of the Public Works Employment Act of 19i6 and 1977 was allocated nearly 36 billion with the expressed purpose of reducing unemployment,by providing federal funding for construction porjects. An analysis of 10.617 project descriptors. as well as questionnaires sent to certain government units. revealed that approximately $153 million were received by public. school. and academic libraries. With LSCA funds for public library construction last appropriated in 19T:L LPW coupled with general revenue sharing has provided.the major stimulus for library capital projects in the 1970s. However. due to subsequent attempts to restrain the growth of the federal budget thelocal Public Works Propram was fundedonly in 1977 and has not been renewed.
