Abstract

Based on the study of present theories of the shuttle-shaped column in Chinese traditional architecture as well as the research of traditional architectural craftsmanship in the Chaoshan area, the paper makes it clear that the shuttle-shaped column is shrunken at both ends and the shuttle-shaped column found in the Chaoshan area in South China represents a local design method of ancient Chinese traditional architecture. Through the analysis of examples and data, and also the interview with local architects, the paper explores the local design method of the shuttle-shaped column in the Chaoshan area.
