Abstract

1. A fraction containing 1016 to 1017 paramagnetic centers per gram was isolated in the zone melting of purified synthetic anthracene. The recurrent formation of paramagnetic centers was observed when the zone melting was repeated. A similar phenomenon is also observed in the case of pyrene and fluorene. 2. Apparently, the paramagnetic centers are formed during the zone melting process itself, and this method cannot be used to obtaine anthracene, pyrene or fluorene that is completely devoid of paramagnetic centers.
