Abstract

The circumstances behind the agreements the BBC entered into with several commercial entities to effectively exploit the 'BBC' brand nationally and internationally are analysed. It is suggested that possible doubts over the BBC's Charter renewal, which would ensure its license fee from the government, have led to the peripheral privatisation of the BBC in order to reduce its reliance on the license fee.
