Abstract
Siegfried Lenz's novel Deutschstunde has aroused many passions since its publication in 1968. Discussion has tended to centre on issues suggested by its ambiguous title: on how far the novel is valid as a portrait of `the German character' in general, how far it succeeds in tackling the `unbewaltigte Vergangenheit' which has made that character so notorious; how far, indeed, the novel is to be seen as a `German lesson' for readers who have yet to confront that character, that past. Thus one finds from an admiring quarter this:
