Abstract

This paper provides an update and follow-through of Verner and Dickinson's extensive review of literature on the lecture method of teaching published in Adult Education in 1967. In reviewing research on the lecture in the ensuing 14 years, one finds little effort directed to the effectiveness of the lecture in adult education, especially in non-classroom settings. The previous clear dichotomy between lecture and other methods no longer exists but has evolved into a consideration of collaborative learning approaches versus self-directed study. The limitations in the extant research highlight the need for renewed efforts to examine the appropriate use of the lecture in adult learning situations.
