Abstract

An Electron Beam Ion Source test-stand has been constructed to investigate the characteristics of EBIS operation important to reliable application as a cyclotron ion source. Ion output scaled as expected with containment length, beam current, and magnetic field, and there were indications of slight beam collapse needed for high duty cycle operation. Impurity gas problems indicate the need for cryogenic pumping in a full scale source. Reliability and reproducibility, both short and long term, were excellent.
