Abstract
This paper analyzes the legal possibility of Geographical Indications status to the culinary products of the Awadh region of the State of Uttar Pradesh, India. The state of Uttar Pradesh is one of the most backward regions of India but has a rich cultural heritage that can be harnessed for growth through the protection of traditional knowledge. This paper was written as part of a research work done by the author under Prof. S. Matilal of the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law in December, 2009. The relevant data was collected on field by the author at the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh through interview of stakeholders. The author hopes to expand the scope of the work to a full scale analysis of the impact of protection of Awadhi cuisine products on the development of the region of Awadh in particular and Uttar Pradesh in general, the development of public policy for the economic development of the state of Uttar Pradesh based on protection of traditional knowledge, and the development and implementation of public administration systems for such a policy.
