Abstract
The Basilica Apostolorum in Milan (Figs. 1 and 2) is the first large-scale cruciform church in the Latin West for which an explicit symbolism is documented. The dedicatory inscription “Condidit Ambrosius”1 proclaims that “Ambrose built a temple for the Lord and consecrated [it] in the name of the Apostles with a gift [of] relics,” and that “the temple is in the form of a cross … a triumphal image [which] marks the place with the sacred victory of Christ”.
