Abstract

Abstract The problem of investigation of the kinetics of breakdownof composites is formulated on the basis of the kinetic concept of the strength of materials. A survey is presented of experimental work on the kinetics of breakdown of unidirectional, fibrous composites, carried out at the A.F. Ioffe Physicotechnical Institute of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences. A combination of phenomenological investigations of the kinetics of breakdown with direct methods of study of the atomic mechanism of rupture, is taken as a basis for further development of the physics of the strength of composite materials.
