Abstract

A statistical mechanical approach to granular material is proposed.Using lattice models from standard statistical mechanics and resultsfrom a mean-field replica approach we find a jamming transition ingranular media closely related to the glass transition insupercooled liquids. These models reproduce the logarithmicrelaxation in granular compaction and reversible-irreversiblelines, in agreement with experimental data. The models also exhibitaging effects and breakdown of the usual fluctuation-dissipationrelation. It is shown that the glass transition may be responsiblefor the logarithmic relaxation and may be related to the cooperativeeffects underlying many phenomena exhibited by granular materialssuch as the Reynolds transition.
