Abstract

The possibility of Jahn-Teller distortions for the isolated impurity (or the defect) under the conditions of the virtual bound state (the impurity levels are degenerate in energy with the band) is considered. It is shown that the vibronic instability of the initial defect state is responsible for the diamagnetism of the defect and the appearance of the U −-center. In accordance with the obtained criterion the small density of states in the conduction band and moderate covalency of the defect promote this.
