Abstract

The need for an international umbrella organization for the activities within the field of environmental geology has become evident. The International Union of Geological Sciences has proved to be the most suitable organization to host the activities carried out world-wide by geoscientists interested in geological aid to environmental planning. The present paper reviews the main international activities in this field, the preparation for a new IUGS Commission on Environmental Geology, the scope of its activities and the structure of its organization.
