Abstract
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) promotes information transfer by distribution of formal publications, and by sponsoring conferences and symposia which lead to informal information transfer between geoscientists. Data have been collected which show that IUGS publications are well-distributed in United States geoscience libraries. Frequency of citation of IUGS publications shows that some of these publications are being used by many geoscientists. An annual bibliography of all IUGS publications is needed as these publications are often difficult to identify and obtain. IUGS fosters some useful informal contact between geoscientists, but its role could be expanded.
