Abstract
Italians were not so numerous in the Nemetskaia Sloboda as representatives of other nationalities, but at least two of them (the Florentine merchant Francesco Guasconi and the castrato singer Filippo Balatri from Pisa) deserve attention: the former for his involvement in the life of the Catholic minority, the latter for his close connection to Peter the Great and his mistress Anna Mons. The article aims to present as much information about life in the Sloboda as can be drawn from Italian sources, especially Balatri's as yet unpublished memoirs.
